The important French organist, composer and teacher, won the Prix de Rome in 1861 and succeeded Franck as the choirmaster of the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde. Already the choirmaster of the Church of the Madeleine, in 1877 he succeeded Saint-Saens as the organist there. An influential teacher at the Conservatoire, he taught Paul Dukas and Florent Schmitt, among others. As a composer, he wrote operas, ballets, symphonies and oratorios - the best known of which is his "Les Sept Paroles du Christ." The present oratorio, Paradis Perdu, won the prize offered by the city of Paris in 1878.
