[Holiday, Billie. (1915–1959)] Leonard, Herman. (1923–2010). Billie Holiday with "Mister", 1949.

Original photograph by the American photographer known for his unique images of jazz icons, who has captured the trailblazing and influential vocalist in the kitchen with her beloved dog, Mister, ca. 1949. Gelatin silver print, printed later. Signed titled, dated and editioned 12/50 in ink, lower margin recto. Overall very good condition. Extremely faint hairline scratches visible under raking light. A very few small dots and dashes of fine retouching in the upper half of the work. Sight 14 x 17.4 inches (35.6 x 44.1 cm.)Window matted and framed under glass to 26.5 by 22.5 inches. Not examined out of frame.

"Holiday’s life was always full of beloved dogs — among them the tiny poodle she carried in her coat pocket; Gypsy, the Great Dane; Chiquita and Pepe, the baby-bottle-fed Chihuahuas; and Bessie Mae Moocho, the wire-haired terrier. But her most deep and unconditional bond was with a boxer named Mister. Although the social critic Quentin Bell, Virginia Woolf’s nephew, might have raised an eyebrow at the besweatered and mink-clad portion of Holiday’s relationship with Mister, theirs was a special bond — so much so that Mister accompanied Holiday to Harlem’s most glamorous clubs, where porters brought him “plates of thick steak” while she performed and he 'kept fans at a polite distance.'"
