Vintage postcard portrait of the German composer and conductor by Edith Barakovich, Vienna, with blind stamp of the photographer to lower margin. Signed, "Dr. Richard Strauss," to lower margin in black ink. 5.25 x 3.25 inches (13.2 x 8.3 cm). Traces (slight loss) of earlier mounting to blank verso; else in fine condition.
Edith Barakovich was a well-known celebrity photographer in Vienna and Berlin whose career was cut short by the advent of Nazism. She committed suicide in Casablanca in 1940, as her emigration to the U.S. was delayed again and again. Her address on the blind stamp (Vienna IV., Prinz-Eugenstrasse) allows to date the photograph to the years 1918–22. Strauss was principal conductor of the Vienna State Opera from 1919 to 1924.
