Karajan, Herbert von. (1908–1989) & Mutter, Anne-Sophie. (b. 1963) & Brandis, Thomas. (1935–2017). Signed Photograph. Unique candid shot from an orchestral rehearsal, seen from above, with orchestral musicians grouped around the Austrian conductor (mostly with their backs to the camera) and discussing with him, while young violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, wearing sneakers, looks on with her instrument.  Signed in black marker pen by Karajan, in blue ink by Mutter, and in black ink by Thomas Brandis, concertmaster of the Berliner Philharmoniker.  Oblong format, 7 x 9.5 inches (17.8 x 23.8 cm).

A caption to verso identifies further persons:  John Charles (English orchestra manager and obtainer of the signatures), Jack C., Mike Bloom, Ant[h]ony Camden (1938–2006; principal oboe and chairman of the board at the London Symphony Orchestra), Douglas Cummings (1946–2014; principal cellist at the London Symphony Orchestra 1969–1993, also on the board), Hugh Maguire (1926–2013; violinist, concertmaster of various British orchestras) and James Judd (b. 1949, British conductor).

Mutter's early signature here bears no resemblance to her signature as a mature artist and is clearly from around 1978, when she became Karajan's protégée.
