Sousa, John Philip. (1854-1932). Signed Photograph with Autograph Musical Quotation from "Diplomat".

Postcard photograph signed vertically in fountain pen, with the great American military bandleader adding a two bar AMQS dated "1905,"  two measures on one staff identified by his autograph caption, "The Diplomat."  Some light wrinkling and staining in lower third, much less pronounced in person than in the shown scan. 3.5 x 5.4 inches; 9 x 13.5 cm.

Sousa composed The Diplomat in 1904.  "I remember that one of my best marches, from the standpoint of lasting popularity, was written with the best tenderloin I ever had tasted for an inspiration. The march was 'The Diplomat' and the city was Mitchell, South Dakota, and mentally at least, I dedicated the march to the unseen cook who prepared that tenderloin." Paul E. Bierley, The Works of John Philip Sousa (Westerville, Ohio: Integrity Press, 1984), p. 43.
