Curtis, Tony. (1925–2010). "The Prince Who Was a Thief"—Early Signed Photograph as "Anthony". Early signed promotional still of the American actor from the 1951 Universal film.  Inscribed to "Harry," with the very uncommon early signature "Anthony Curtis."  Handstamp, "Anthony Curtis appearing in Universal-International Pictures," to verso.  10 x 8.25  inches (25.4 x 20.7 cm).  In fine condition.

The caption on the photograph does not mention the title of the film.  The name "Anthony Curtis" was a screen name adopted when the actor signed his contract with Universal in 1949, his original name being Bernard Schwartz.  He was credited as "Anthony Curtis" in his earliest films only until 1950.  In The Prince Who Was a Thief, he was already credited as "Tony Curtis" (as ever after), but the copyright date "1951" on the present photograph seems to rule out an association with any earlier movie.  The Prince Who Was a Thief was the first movie in which Curtis had the leading role.

From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
