A student of Ysaye and Capet, he gave numerous important premieres of works by Milhaud (First Quartet), Ravel (Tzigane, in violin/piano version), Roussel (Second Violin Sonata) and, most importantly, Prokofiev, who wrote his Second Violin Concerto for him in 1935 after having heard him premiere his Sonata for Two Violins with Samuel Dushkin.
