Rare original cabinet card photograph of the great composer and conductor, by the Viennese photograph Josef Székely, with his imprint to the lower mount and verso. "Dir. Mahler" inscribed in period ink in an unknown hand to verso, light toning, small stain to lower right blank edge, slight nicks to corners, else in very fine condition. 4.25 x 6.5 inches (10.5 x 16.5 cm).

The Mahler Foundation records this as the first known portrait of Mahler as the Director of the Vienna Court Opera (Hofoper). In September Mahler was appointed conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, succeeding Hans Richter (1843-1916).
