The present writing originally appeared in Wilde's "Phrases and Philosophies for the Use of the Young," first published in the 1894 December (and only) issue of the Oxford student magazine, The Chameleon. In Wilde's famous libel trial of 1895, the publication came under attack in Wilde's cross-examination by Defense Attorney Edward Carson.
