Thalberg, Sigismund. (1812–1871) & Liszt, Franz. (1811–1886) & Prudent, Émile. (1817–1863). Sammelband of First and Early Editions. Large sammelband, 10" x 13", brown leather with gilt decoration and lettering, containing separately issued early and first edition publications in folio, primarily by Sigismund Thalberg but also including three by Franz Liszt and five by Emile Prudent.
"Together with Liszt, Thalberg must be ranked as the greatest virtuoso pianist of the mid-19th century, a view endorsed by Mendelssohn in a letter of 30 March 1840. In keeping with the virtuoso tradition he played almost exclusively music of his own composition, which consisted mainly of fantasias on favourite opera arias by Rossini, Meyerbeer, Donizetti, Verdi and sometimes Weber and Mozart." (Grove Online)
Generally French issues, the majority published in Paris but interestingly, most having 19th century music distributor stamps or labels identifying that the editions were sold in Havana, Cuba. The spine identifies the grouping as "Album Musical" with the initials "H. M." and the gilt presentation on the front cover reads "To Miss Hatty Morrill with the Respects Isabel F. Ceballos." The pages edged in gilt and with colorfully printed end papers. The block separated from the spine and front board within, the first title page ("Variations Caprice") separated from the rest of the folio, scattered browning and foxing (a few quite heavily, but generally very good), otherwise fine. A very interesting collection. As follows:
