A splendid association copy inscribed on the front wrapper by one leading twentieth-century American composer to another: "To Virgil Thomson / from your friend / Elliott Carter / New York, Jan. 25, 1960". Thomson's circular ownership stamp, "Virgil Thomson Collections" appears below the inscription.


"Variations for Orchestra" was commissioned by the Louisville Philharmonic Society, Inc. and was first performed by the Louisville Orchestra on April 21, 1956.
