Autograph signature of the British novelist of such satirical classics as Vanity Fair and The Luck of Barry Lyndon. On a small clipped sheet, dated Buffalo, Dec. 29, 1855. Mounting stains to upper edge, repaired splits, else fine. 3.25 x 1.75 in (8 x 4 cm)
Signed by Thackeray on his second lecture tour in America, approximately two months from his departure from England on October 13, 1855, on the "Africa." The second lecture tour was not as successful as the first. Thackeray was lionized as before; he made money; but the newspapers were more critical than they had been in 1852. He himself was tired and ill, and this time the oddities of American life oppressed rather than amused him.
