Handel, George Frederic. (1685-1759). Redemption. A Sacred Oratorio In Score. . ScoreLondon: Arnold. 1800. First Edition. Selected from the Favorite Works of G.F. Handel and formed into a Regular Drama by Samuel Arnold.
224 pages, folio (c.32.5 x 23.4cm), engraved title and music, preface. Worn contemporary boards. Lacking spine cover, loosely held together.
The preface by Arnold ends with the note that "This oratorio was first performed at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, 1786." Samuel Arnold (1740-1802) began editing Handel's oratorios in the 1780s for performances and planned to produce, with Thomas Linley the elder, a complete edition. Some 180 publications, including 40 oratorios, were issued as part of a series he produced between 1787 and 1797. Arnold's "Redemption" is a pastiche of works by Handel from other oratorios, with new recits composed by Arnold to create a new musical drama. Smith puts the first publication of the Redemption, at c. 1814, though he notes that it may have been issued previously. This issue, marked 1800, is the earliest issue we have seen with none before 1814 listed in OCLC.
