Ruffo, Titta. (1877 - 1953). Signed Photograph to José Soler. Interesting signed photograph from Golden Age Italian baritone, addressed to the great heroic tenor José Soler (1904 - 1999) signed and dated 1947, effusively inscribed: "Al Tenore José Soler della bellissima voce per ricordo del suo successo nel Trovatore al teatro Verdi di Firenze, con infiniti auguri per il suo avvenire." Small pinhole in upper margin, lower corners a little bent, otherwise very good condition. 16.5 x 23.5 cm. A marvelous association.
Known as the "Voce del leone" ("voice of the lion"), Ruffo was renowned for his enormous voice, thrilling high notes and dramatic force on stage. Other baritones, even the most eminent, were in awe of Ruffo's voice: Giuseppe De Luca, a baritone star in his own right, said of Ruffo, "His was not a voice, it was a miracle."
Soler made his La Scala debut in May of 1947 under the baton of Tullio Serafin. He was frequently cast opposite Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi and his "voice had a profound impact on the Italian opera scene." (Susana Salgado, "The Teatro Solis." p. 187)
