[Wagner, Richard. (1813–1883)]. Original Cabinet Photograph . Rare original cabinet photograph by Hans Brand of Wagner's funeral at Bayreuth, 1883. Chipped around the edges of the mount, small bend to the lower left corner of the photograph, overall fine.

After Wagner's death in Venice a funerary gondola bore Wagner's remains over the Grand Canal and his body was then taken to Germany where it was buried in the garden of the Villa Wahnfried in Bayreuth. "The town was in mourning. Black flags fluttered from the buildings and the bells of all the churches tolled as the funeral procession wound its way from the station to the gates of Wahnfried." (Barry Millington, "The Sorcerer of Bayreuth")
