Fauré, Gabriel. (1845-1924). . Original Cabinet Photograph and Autograph Musical Quotation to Van Hout. Uncommon ensemble from the important and prolific French composer. A student of Saint-Saens, he was an influential organist and was teacher of Ravel, Enesco, Schmitt, Boulanger and others.


An original cabinet photograph, nicely presented in a frame together with a boldly penned autograph musical quotation from an espressivo viola passage in the first movement of the composer's Opus 15 Piano Quartet in C minor. The AMQS laid down to the mat, signed and dated 20 May, 1892 and inscribed to the Belgian violist Léon van Hout. The photograph measuring 9.5 x 13.5 cm; the quotation 13.5 x 8 cm; overall 27 x 34 cm. Unexamined out of frame, the photograph somewhat spotted and possibly affixed from the rear to the inner mount, a few light stains or marks to the mat, else fine.


Van Hout was violist of the Ysaye String Quartet, founded in 1886, who gave the first performance of Fauré's piano Quintet Op. 89.
