Large 1746 engraving executed by William Hogarth and Claude Grignion after Hogarth's painting of the influential English actor, playwright, theatre manager, and producer who gained prominence with his appearance in the title role of Shakespeare's Richard III and who is generally considered the greatest actor of the 18th century. Engraving measures 22 x 18 inches (56 x 46 cm) framed to slightly larger 24.5 x 20.25 inches (62 x 51.5 cm).
Lettered in the image and below with title, "Shakespear. Act 5. Scene 7", and publication details, "Painted by Wm: Hogarth/Engrav'd by Wm: Hogarth & C. Grignion./Publish'd according to Act of Parliamt. June 20th. 1746." Paulsen 165 ii/ii. Fine impression on laid paper with good margins, probably from a Boydell edition, ca. 1780 or earlier.
One of Hogarth's best images, depicting his close friend the famous actor David Garrick. Richard is shown in his tent before the Battle of Bosworth, at the moment of grief and horror for his past deeds. A splendid engraving.
