Hammerstein, Oscar. (1895-1960). Signed Letter during Preparation of "Flower Drum Song." . 1 page typed letter, signed "Oscar." New York City, January 3, 1958. To Jean Dalrymple, in full: "I looked over the list of scenes and numbers in Helen Thomas' musical version of 'The Barretts of Wimpole St.' I cannot say that it told me very much. Perhaps some time it would be best if we can sit down and listen to some of Miss Thomas' songs. This cannot be in the immediate future because Dick and I are at the moment up to our necks in the job of writing, and we don't want to come up for air until we have the assurance that we are going to have a score ready in time for the production of 'Flower Drum Song.'" A few folds and creases, else fine.
Flower Drum Song was the eighth musical by the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. It was based on the 1957 novel, The Flower Drum Song, by Chinese-American author C. Y. Lee. The piece opened in 1958 on Broadway and was afterwards presented in the West End and on tour. It was subsequently made into a 1961 musical film.
