[Dance] Mielziner, Jo. (1901 - 1976). Five Costume Designs from Shadow of the Wind, c. 1948 . Five original drawings in pencil and colored pencil on tracing paper, sheet sizes 11 x 9 3/4 in. (29.8 x 23.0 cm). Some inscribed with titles (Song 4, 3 Girls; Song 6, Quiver; Song 3, Attendant). In very good condition, three with tears, one with loss to u.r. corner, all with moderate creasing.

From the production of the American Ballet Theatre with choreography by Anthony Tudor, scenery, costumes, and lighting by Jo Mielziner, which had its premiere at the New York Metropolitan Opera House, April 14, 1948.

The place of Jo Mielziner in the history of American theatre is beyond dispute. Numerous books and expositions have been devoted to his oeuvre, including Mary Henderson’s “Mielziner: Master of Modern Stage Design, Back Stage Books” (2001), in which another design from the "By the Beautiful Sea" is reproduced. The IMDB describes Mielziner as “the most influential theatrical designer of his era, designing the scenery and the lighting for some 200 Broadway productions (his output was astounding, his actual credits may extend to 300 in total if off-Broadway credits are counted), many of which became American classics (see "Other Works")” and notes that “American theatrical design can be divided distinctly into pre and post Mielziner periods.”
