Satie, Erik. (1866-1925). Sports et Divertissements. Paris: Publications Lucien Vogel. 1914. First edition.

45 pages (23 leaves), oversize oblong folio (406 x 448 mm; 16 x 17.625 inches), one of 900 copies of which this is one of 675 on Hollande à la forme paper, number 386, music printed in black on red staves in facsimile of the composer's extraordinary calligraphic autograph manuscript, colour pochoir frontispiece ("Comédie Italienne"), black and white illustrated titles to each piece by Charles Martin, as issued, though lacking all but a partial rear sheet of the original publisher's printed portfolio. Fully disbound, front wrapper, limitation and pochoir sheets heavily chipped around the edges, with some chipping and small tears to the plate sheets as well.

The sports and pastimes of pre-war France in the present work are as follows: 'Balançoire', 'La Chasse', Comédie Italienne' - see the frontispiece, 'La Mariée', 'Colin-Maillard', 'La Pêche', 'Yachtin'g, 'Bain de Mer', 'Le Carnaval', 'Le Golf', 'La Pieuvre', 'Les Courses', 'Les Quatre Coins', 'Pique Nique', 'Water-Chute', 'Le Tango', 'Traineau', 'Flirt', 'Feu d'Artifice', 'Le Tennis'.  As art historian Roger Shattuck has written, this folio remains "perhaps the sole example of a modern work that combines, precariously but successfully, calligraphy, painting, poetry, and music."
